Angelique Kerber Becomes First No. 1 Seed to Ever Lose in First Round of French Open

By Anthony Blake

Serena Williams being out of the 2017 French Open after her pregnancy announcement was supposed to make the women’s side of the draw wide open – but not this wide open.

No. 1 seed Angelique Kerber was thoroughly dominated by Ekaterina Makarova en route to a brisk, 6-2, 6-2 loss to become the first top-seeded woman to exit the French Open in the first round in the open era.

Most of the loss falls squarely on Kerber, as she dropped serve six times and committed a generous 25 unforced errors.

Maybe it’s the pressure of being the top seed or perhaps it’s just a bad draw, but either way, this is quite the humiliating defeat for Kerber.
