A tough road awaits the Avalanche in their 25 remaining games this season. The Avs currently sit in tenth place in the conference with 60 points, two points out of eighth place. They have played one more game than Calgary and Phoenix, who currently occupy ninth and eighth place. They have played two more games than the two teams directly behind them in the standings.

It is truly astounding that the Avalanche find themselves in this position. Before last week the Avalanche were 3-10 in their last 13. The Avalanche were in eighth place with 47 points before that stretch and yet their free fall has cost them only two points in the standings.

Last week helped with this problem a lot. The Avalanche had a huge win over the Blackhawks that propelled the Avs into the weekend. They took two contests into overtime, beating the Hurricanes and losing to the Blues. Even with the loss, the Avalanche managed five out of a possible six points.

The Hurricanes game included an incredible overtime goal. A shot from just outside the circle by Ryan O’Reilly beat Cam Ward with just over a second left in overtime. It was a perfect shot and an exhilarating goal in the Avalanche’s 4-3 win. Hejduk, Landeskog and Stastny also scored for the Burgandy and Blue.

In the St. Louis game, the Avalanche were outshot 44-19 but stayed in the game because Semyon Varlamov was stellar. Former Blues defenseman Erik Johnson also played with an edge. He was out to prove to his old team that it was a mistake to trade him. If only he could prove it in every game that he plays.

The Avalanche have three more road games before heading home. They are playing the Canucks, the Oilers and the Jets. The schedule provides two winnable games. Could they possibly steal five of six points again? Another thing to consider, Matt Duchene is now skating with the team and should be cleared for contact soon.
