Embattled N.J. prep star Yuri Wright has verbally committed to play for Jon Embree and the Colorado Buffaloes next season. Wright, a 4-star cornerback recruit, announced the decision today and is the second 4-star cornerback to commit to the Buffs within the last 24 hours. CU also gained a verbal commit from Kenneth Crawley a 4-star cornerback from Woodson HS in the Washington DC area.
However, you may have heard Wright’s name for all of the wrong reasons. Earlier this month he was expelled from traditional football power Don Bosco Prep after graphic posts from his Twitter account were uncovered. Some of the posts on his page were sexually graphic and Don Bosco Prep, being a private Catholic school, would not put up with them so he was therefore expelled.
Wright had narrowed down his four schools to Michigan, Notre Dame, Rutgers and Colorado. It was rumored that Michigan was his “dream destination” but once his tweets came to light Michigan stopped recruiting him.
On the football side of things this is a huge signing for Embree and CU. Wright, who stands at 6’1″ 185 lbs, is considered the fourth best cornerback recruit in the country and the 40th best player in the nation according to ESPNU 150. Earlier this month he played in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl and recruiters have praised his polished footwork and his great length at the corner position.
Embree has had to deal with these types of issues before and he is a coach that believes in second chances. There is no question that he is willing to suspend players based some of the decisions he made last year but Embree’s stance is that if the player makes an honest effort to change he will give them a second chance. I’m sure Embree spoke to Wright about this before he committed and assured him that he will not put up with the type of behavior that got him expelled.
Nonetheless, CU gained a valuable player for this years recruiting cycle and has quietly put together a solid class in Embree’s second year as head coach. According to the recruiting site Rivals.com, CU’s 2012 class has moved from 51st to 33rd in the past week.
National signing day is on February 1st.
