Cavaliers Owner Dan Gilbert Requested David Stern Block Chris Paul Trade
Steve Mitchell - US PRESSWIRE

The big news in the NBA right now is the vetoed trade that would have sent Chris Paul to the LA Lakers.  The NBA community is unsure of how to react to this situation.  Some say this could be worse than the incident in the Palace, when players were brawling with fans.  Others say this is just a simple veto and nothing will come out of it.  The facts are this:  The owners, especially small-market owners, did not want another super team to be formed.  Everyone’s most hated owner (I know Donald Sterling has to be mad he didn’t get this title) Dan Gilbert was so incensed he sent an email to Stern, demanding the trade be blocked.

Commissioner,

It would be a travesty to allow the Lakers to acquire Chris Paul in the apparent trade being discussed.

This trade should go to a vote of the 29 owners of the Hornets.

Over the next three seasons this deal would save the Lakers approximately $20 million in salaries and approximately $21 million in luxury taxes. That $21 million goes to non-taxpaying teams and to fund revenue sharing.

I cannot remember ever seeing a trade where a team got by far the best player in the trade and saved over $40 million in the process. And it doesn’t appear that they would give up any draft picks, which might allow to later make a trade for Dwight Howard. (They would also get a large trade exception that would help them improve their team and/or eventually trade for Howard.) When the Lakers got Pau Gasol (at the time considered an extremely lopsided trade) they took on tens of millions in additional salary and luxury tax and they gave up a number of prospects (one in Marc Gasol who may become a max-salary player).

I just don’t see how we can allow this trade to happen.

I know the vast majority of owners feel the same way that I do.

When will we just change the name of 25 of the 30 teams to the Washington Generals?

Please advise….

Dan G.

There is the email in its entirety. Thanks to Yahoo Sports for that.  Once again, Gilbert is acting like a jilted lover and all of this can be traced back to LeBron James.  That should come as some solace to Lakers fans.  You just got a new reason to hate LeBron.

I have one last thought, though.  Did Gilbert send this e-mail in Comic Sans?  That may have been what prompted Stern to action.

What a jealous little whiner, obviously still butt hurt about losing Lebron for nothing. Apparently, he wants NOLA to feel the same pain. Misery loves company?

I agree with RevoltinStyle. Gilbert whining about another super team. All those money issues may be true, but we all know that your big market teams still make the most money anyway. It’s sad that this new NBA thinks that small market teams will be consistently in the mix to win. The NBA was at it’s most popular back in the 80′s and early 90′s. When MOST teams had 3 legit superstars. Hypocracy isn’t a good look.
