The Memphis Grizzlies added a little more depth to their frontline on Wednesday when Grizzlies General Manager and Vice President of Operations Chris Wallace announced that the Grizzlies had acquired forward/center Marreese Speights from the Phildelphia 76ers. The deal was part of a three team trade that also involved the New Orleans Hornets. As part of the deal the Grizzlies will send guard Xavier Henry to New Orleans and a 2012 second round draft pick to the 76ers. The Hornets also sent a future second round pick to the 76ers as part of the deal.

Speights a 6’11 center has averages of 7.2 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 0.53 blocks, on .492 shooting in 205 games with just four starts in three seasons, and has not played this season for Philadelphia. Speights had a career year in 2009-2010 when he averaged 8.6 points, and 4.1 rebounds in 16.4 minutes. Speights, originally from St. Petersburg, Florida, was a part of the 2007 NCAA champion Florida Gators and set a school record by shooting .671 from the field as a freshman. Speights improved upon his great freshman campaign by averaging 14.5 points, 8.1 rebounds, and shooting .624 from the field.

Speights was then selected 16th overall in the 2008 NBA draft and has not really played up to his potential thus far in his career. Henry, the second player in the deal, has averaged 4.3 points, 1.0 rebounds, on .406 shooting, in only 38 games (16 starts) as a rookie last season for the Grizzlies. Henry, from the University of Kansas, has not played in Memphis’ 5 games this season due to a right ankle sprain and is hoping to kick-start his career with a fresh start in New Orleans.
