Time and time again, professional athletes let their egos get the best of them. Time and time again, we hear of these “professional” athletes getting into off the court trouble. It happened again, and now Houston Rockets guard Kyle Lowry is being charged with misdemeanor battery.

According to Nevada state law, where the incident occurred, Lowry’s punishment can be up to six months in jail and a $1000 fine; community service can also be substituted for jail.

First, the incident. Kyle Lowry was attending a basketball game at a Las Vegas training center on September 22nd when he became upset at an official. After the game, he allegedly threw a basketball and cursed at her. Upon arriving at the official’s area, another basketball came flying in, allegedly from Lowry, and hit her in the face. She said her nose would have been broken if she was not leaning over. Corey Maggette apologized for Lowry’s actions, and Lowry also came over and spoke with the official.

NBA players have earned their position in the NBA, and it can just as quickly be taken away. As a professional athlete, he should be held to a higher standard. Kids everywhere look up to these players as heroes. If the athlete cannot keep his composure, how can we ask the kid to not emulate the person he looks up to?

Perhaps I’m just being ignorant, but I am tired of hearing about athletes getting into trouble. Lowry has been summoned for a court date of February 2nd, and will find out his punishment then. Rockets GM Daryl Morey has no comment on the situation.
