Rasheed Wallace Eyeing An NBA Comeback

According to sources that are close to the situation Rasheed Wallace is eyeing a comeback to the NBA, although he is still unsure if this is what he really wants. Wallace retired in 2010 after 15 seasons and has been working out recently while also talking with a few of his friends still in the NBA to get an idea of where he could possibly land if he does indeed come back. Wallace, now 37 years old, was one of the league’s best power forwards when he was in his prime and did have a pretty good run while with the Celtics.

Although there has been a few character issues related to Wallace in the past sources that have talked with Wallace and been to his workouts have said that Wallace is “serious” about this comeback. But still, teams that have been contacted about the possibility of signing Wallace have said that have not had any contact with Wallace or any of his representatives. Wallace’s agent, Bill Strickland, was contacted by Yahoo! Sports and said that, “As a veteran player, (Wallace) knows what it takes to be reinstated.”

Even though Wallace is 37 and has had back ailing back problems throughout his career he could still be a pretty good addition for a contending team looking for another big body. Wallace averaged 9.0 points and 4.1 rebounds per game during the Celtics 2009-2010 run to the NBA Finals. It seemed that Wallace did not truly get into playing shape with the Celtics until they finally reached the Finals, eventually losing to the Los Angeles Lakers, where he played very well.

Several GMs told Yahoo! Sports that they believe Wallace’s scoring ability and defense would be better than anyone else available on their rosters. One NBA GM who is interested in the possibility of signing Wallace did say, “I’d be worried about his conditioning in a condensed season.” There are some red flags concerning the signing but in his 15 seasons with Washington, Portland, Atlanta, Detroit and Boston, Wallace averaged 14.6 points and 6.7 rebounds and Wallace is more than capable of still providing solid backup minutes.
