Dallas Mavericks to Inactivate Lamar Odom For Rest of 2012 Season
Matthew Emmons- US PRESSWIRE

After plenty of hand-wringing over the course of Lamar Odom‘s time with the Dallas Mavericks, team owner Mark Cuban and the managing staff have found a way to part with the former Los Angeles Lakers sixth-man extraordinaire without ruffling too many feathers in the process.

According to reports, Odom will be placed on the inactive list by the Mavericks today, and will not participate for the remainder of the 2012 season.

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein:

Sources said Monday that Odom’s departure will be immediate and that the Mavericks intend to simply list him as inactive for the rest of the season instead of outright releasing him, leaving open the possibility that they could still trade him after the season in conjunction with the draft.

Any team that has Odom on its roster as of June 29 must buy him out by that date for $2.4 million or otherwise accept responsibility for the full $8.2 million that Odom is scheduled to earn in 2012-13.

At this point, though, it’s impossible to believe the Mavericks could find a willing trade partner for Odom given the circus that surrounded him during this brief time as a Dallas Maverick.

His marriage to Khloe Kardashian, and the reality show cameras that followed them around town, were an unmistakable distraction that never allowed Odom to become a part of the fabric of the defending NBA Champions.

It was inevitable that Dallas would cut ties with Odom, it was just a matter of formalities, and how it would be done.

By placing Odom on the inactive list, Dallas can save face by not giving him an outright release and Odom theoretically could find a new home this summer if another team is willing to roll the dice.

For Mark Cuban the calculated risk made on Odom turned out to be an abject failure.

As any businessperson will tell you– especially one of Cuban’s caliber– it’s just part of the business.

You win some. You lose some.

In this case, Lamar Odom is a lost cause.
