Thanks to the opportunists at Queens, N.Y.-based sports apparel company Crosstown NY, you can give one of the meanest possible gifts to friends who happen to be New York Knicks‘ fans. Amar’e Stoudemire punched a fire extinguisher case and severely cut his hand after Monday night’s 104-94 Game 2 loss to the Miami Heat.

Stoudemire will miss Game 3, and possibly the rest of the series, although it has been more recently reported that Stoudemire wants to return for Game 4.

“I am so mad at myself right now,” Stoudemire said on his Twitter account late Monday. “I want to apologize to the fans and my team, not proud of my actions, headed home for a new start.”

It caused quite a scene after Stoudemire cut his hand; paramedics were called to the scene, and he needed stitches in his hand to stop the bleeding.

It has been a tough few months, on and off the court for Amar’e. He took a leave of absence from the Knicks in February after his brother died in a car accident. A bulging disk in his back caused him to miss 13 games late in the year, and he and Carmelo Anthony are struggling to co-exist in the current offense. Amar’e received just seven shots in Game 1 and nine in Game 2 and is averaging 13.5 points in the series.

A cloud now hangs over this Knicks team, who appear to be headed towards a NBA Playoff sweep; they have looked totally outmatched in the first two games of this series, and the Miami Heat look totally locked in. Not a good combination for the Knicks or Amar’e Stoudemire, who might have seen his career as a New York Knick shatter the same time as the fire extinguisher glass.
