Cowboys Linemen Must Wear Knee Braces

Cowboys head coach Wade Phillips has put on his white coat and become Dr. Phillips. After starting left guard Kyle Kosier and right tackle Marc Colombo both suffered significant knee injuries this preseason, Phillips has taken action in an attempt to prevent further problems. From now on, all Dallas offensive and defensive linemen must wear knee braces during practice and games. Colombo was wearing a knee brace when a loud popping noise. That noise was loose cartilage in his knee that he had removed during arthroscopic surgery. Kosier was not wearing a knee brace when he sprained his MCL, so clearly Phillips’ idea will not prevent all injuries, but will certainly reduce the chances of them.
Former Dallas coach and current Miami president of football operations Bill Parcells has always made wearing knee braces mandatory for all linemen. When Phillips took over for Parcells in 2007, he gave all Cowboys players the option of wearing a knee brace until now. Losing two starting offensive lineman will change your strategy in a hurry, especially when you have a $67 million quarterback who needs protecting. The Cowboys cannot afford to lose a starting offensive lineman for a substantial amount of time if they hope to contend for the Super Bowl this year. Mabye Phillips’ idea will work.
