Cowboys’ Barber Breaks New Coach Garrett’s Dress Code
[picappgallerysingle id="10209924"]
Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett implemented a new team dress code for his first game as skipper. Before and after this past Sunday’s win over the Giants, Cowboys players were seen in sports coats, slacks, ties, and dress shoes. Unlike the past Wade Phillips administration (if I may use that term), players are now required to dress in this business professional fashion on the flight to and from all away games. However, the most unlikely Cowboy broke Garrett’s new dress code. Running back Marion Barber boarded the flight to and from New York wearing a sports coat, blue jeans, and sneakers. It comes as no surprise that Garrett won’t say whether Barber will be punished for the incident. “We lay out expectations for our players for all different kinds of behaviors,” Garrett said. “There will be consequences if they don’t follow those procedures, and we’ll keep those consequences in-house.” Take that as you will; I guess we’ll have to learn how to translate Garrett Speak just like we translate Jerry Speak.
I’m torn on this one because I admire a coach who uses things like a dress code to earn the respect of his players. However, I have always been fond of Barber for his ruthless running style and the unrealistic amount of effort he puts into every play. It’s been rumored that Barber was fined for the incident, but Garrett said that the Minnesota product will remain a team captain. That’s really what puzzles me the most; Barber has never done anything out of line, so I even wonder if it’s a respect thing between him and Garrett. Maybe Barber is possibly the only Cowboy who does not have the utmost respect for Garrett. Several Dallas players have publicly expressed their liking and respect of Garrett. Linebacker Keith Brooking told reporters that Garrett “seemed like he belonged there,” speaking of the head coaching position. As much as I like Barber, I have to say that I hope he indeed was fined and that he and Garrett had a discussion. I don’t have much respect for Garrett, but I want what’s best for the Cowboys. We’ll see if this new dress code becomes a problem for Barber or any other player going forward.
