Dallas Cowboys Hire Rob Ryan as New Defensive Coordinator
Following a scheduled interview on Friday, the Dallas Cowboys and Cleveland Browns defensive coordinator Rob Ryan moved on to contract negotiations over the holiday weekend. On Sunday, the Associated Press reported that Ryan has agreed to become the Cowboys’ new defensive coordinator, replacing interim play caller Paul Pasqualoni, who is the new head coach at UConn.
Ryan is the son of former NFL head coach Buddy Ryan and twin brother of New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan. Rob Ryan played college football at Southwestern Oklahoma State University before joining Buddy Ryan’s staff with the Arizona Cardinals as the secondary coach. Rob Ryan served as the Oakland Raiders defensive coordinator for five seasons before joining the Browns in 2009. Ryan is still under contract with the Browns through 2011, but with their hiring of new head coach Pat Shurmur, Ryan was given permission to interview with the Cowboys.
The Cowboys will face the Jets on the road during the 2011 season, so the two brothers will have a chance to face each other again. The Browns lost to the Jets 26-20 in overtime in 2010 and the twins provided quite the entertaining press battle during the week leading up to the game. Rob Ryan did a great job with the inadequate players he had Cleveland, so I expect him to have the more talented Cowboys defense ready to face Rex Ryan’s Jets, who will face the Pittsburgh Steelers in the AFC Championship game on Sunday.
Rob Ryan is one of the architects of the modern 3-4 defense, something Dallas head coach Jason Garrett wants the team to keep from the Wade Phillips era. Ryan looks to revive a Cowboys defense that ranked a lowly 23rd in the NFL in 2010, which is a big drop from its top 10 ranking in 2009. Even worse, the Dallas defense allowed a franchise record 436 points this season, nearly twice as many as 2009. With the hiring of Ryan, Garrett will now look to complete the defensive staff with Ryan’s input.
