Dallas Cowboys Fined for Players Meeting With Rob Ryan

Many of the Dallas Cowboys defensive players recently met to discuss offseason plans that involve learning new defensive coordinator Rob Ryan’s defense. March 15 was the earliest date that teams could contact their players and when off season programs usually begin. The Cowboys have been fined by NFL commissioner Roger Goodell for the incident, but the rules regarding the situation are blurry due to the NFL lockout.

The NFL made the public assume that players and coaches could have no contact during the lockout, but apparently that’s not the case. Although the Cowboys’ players meeting with Ryan was after the lockout began, the NFL is disciplining the team for meeting before the approved offseason date.

The Cowboys are not the only team fined for meeting during the “dead” time; the Cleveland Browns, San Francisco 49ers and Miami Dolphins were also fined for similar instances. All three of those teams have new head coaches and/or new coordinators just like the Cowboys. Still, the league evidently will not tolerate teams trying to learn new systems during an unapproved time after the release of this statement:

“There have been rules in place for years that govern what is permissible prior to the start of the off-season program. Before the offseason program begins, players are permitted to use the Club’s facilities on a voluntary basis.”

The statement went on to say that players could not be paid, reimbursed for travel, allowed to “participate in organized meetings of any kind,” or directed by a coach or trainer of any kind “during this period.”

Knowing Dallas team owner Jerry Jones, he will pay the fine and any others that come from his players meeting illegally with Ryan, head coach Jason Garrett or any other Cowboys staff member. As for Ryan, it’s no surprise that he broke a rule considering the track record of his brother, New York Jets head coach Rex Ryan, and father, former NFL coach Buddy Ryan. Don’t be shocked if something like this happens again, Cowboys fans.
