NFL Lockout Lifted by Federal Judge

At least one person with authority recognizes the absurdity of the NFL lockout. Federal Judge Susan Nelson Richard gave her ruling of the NFL players’ lawsuit against the league owners to lift the lockout On Monday, Nelson has temporarily lifted the lockout at the request of the players, which is a step in the right direction in resolving the current labor dispute. However, the NFL owners are set to appeal Nelson’s ruling early Tuesday morning.

The NFL owners announced they will first request a stay from Nelson on the case and then take the case to the 8th Circuit United States Court of Appeals in St. Louis if the stay is denied. The NFL released the following statement:

“We will promptly seek a stay from Judge Nelson pending an expedited appeal to the Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals. “We believe that federal law bars injunctions in labor disputes. We are confident that the Eighth Circuit will agree.”

A majority of NFL fans are overjoyed at Nelson’s ruling because they believe it is the owners who are the primary culprits in the dispute. DeMaurice Smith is an NFL Players Association Executive.

“I’m happy for our players and for our fans,” Smith said. “Today, those who love football are the winners.”

Agents of almost all NFL players are using media outlets like Twitter to encourage their clients to be at their respective workout facilities first early Tuesday morning. Pittsburgh Steelers safety Ryan Clark is urging his teammates to be at their facilities at 8:00 a.m. sharp on Tuesday morning.

“I’m trying to get guys there at 8 o’clock, to get out there and show we want to be here, we want too be part of this organization and we want to be on the field,” Clark said. “We want to show this is not a litigation process but an attempt to have football in 2011.”

If a stay on the case is granted, the two sides are scheduled to continue negotiations on May 16.
