Dallas Cowboys Select USC’s Tyron Smith With Ninth Overall Pick in 2011 NFL Draft
With the No. 9 overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys surprised no one by selecting Tyron Smith, the offensive tackle from USC. With the offensive line in Dallas beginning to deteriorate, Cowboys team owner and general manager Jerry Jones got smart and listened to head coach Jason Garrett. Smith will make an immediate impact on the team, especially if right tackle Marc Colombo is not kept for the 2011 season.
At 6’5” and 307 pounds, Smith is a quick, athletic tackle. Most scouts think Smith needs to add about 10 pounds to be an elite NFL tackle, but his athleticism is unrivaled at the position. If the Cowboys are able to retain left tackle Doug Free in free agency, quarterback Tony Romo won’t be blindsided from the outside much anymore. Free and center Andre Gurode are the only sure things on the Dallas offensive line with Colombo and left guard Kyle Kosier constantly hobbled by injury in 2010. Expect Smith to start at least half the season this fall.
