Jerry Jones: Marc Colombo Won’t be a Dallas Cowboy in 2011

Those who have been fans of the Dallas Cowboys for any period of time since 1989 know that Cowboys team owner and general manager Jerry Jones speaks his own language. Here in the DFW, we like to call that language Jerry Speak. During the NFL Draft on Thursday night, Jones gave us plenty of it. When you’ve heard a lot of it, you learn how to decipher it into pure English. Upon the Cowboys’ drafting of USC offensive tackle Tyron Smith in the first round of the draft, we translated Jones saying that Dallas right tackle Marc Colombo won’t be a Cowboy in 2011.

When interviewed about the Cowboys’ ninth overall selection, Jones said Smith is already at the top of Dallas’ depth chart for right tackle. However, he replied in Jerry Speak when asked what that meant for Colombo.

“We don’t have to make that decision tonight,” Jones said. “But I think anytime that you make a pick of that stature or that high, he is going to play. And that was a big part of the decision, he can play and will play, and if he plays he will have to take somebody’s place.”

Colombo was hobbled by injury for much of the 2010 season and is due a $1.9 million salary this season plus a $2.6 million roster bonus. The Cowboys can’t afford two elite starter salaries at the same position, so Smith’s drafting means Colombo must be gone by the process of elimination and from translating the latest message of Jerry Speak. However, the “he will have to take somebody’s place” part is pretty clear.
