Jerry Jones Suggests Dallas Cowboys RB Marion Barber is Gone for 2011 Season

Dallas Cowboys running back Marion Barber’s status with the team has been a hot topic of discussion this off-season. Barber broke Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett’s team dress code in November and had a run-in with the LAPD in February, to mention a few negative instances. Barber’s high salary adds to team owner and general manager Jerry Jones’ comments on Thursday night during the first round of the NFL Draft that Barber will not be a Dallas Cowboys in 2011.

“I wouldn’t dismiss if we see an opportunity at running back, but we have wanted our third running back to be a special teams player and we haven’t had that,” Jones said. “That is a goal. We’ve got a legitimate way to put the snaps on a running back at any of these second to the fifth round. We are not quite the perfect fit there (running back) because we don’t have the special teams player. A lot of that also depends on some of the decisions we make with the veterans. But it is enough that we spent a lot of time talking about running backs.”

With Jones implying the Cowboys will make the drafted running back the third man on the depth chart, we know that one of the current three backs on the roster will not be there this fall. Jones’ desire to have the third back as a dominant special teams player dates back to Cowboys running back Tashard Choice’s promotion in Week 13 of 2010. Before the game, Jones publicly chastised Choice for not being a good special teams player although he was not on any special teams units. Choice turned in a 100-yard rushing performance to shut Jones up and earn his permanent place on the teams’ offensive side of the depth chart. His strong showing also contributes to the notion that Barber will be gone by the time the 2011 season begins, whenever that may be.

Reports suggest the Cowboys are interested in Illinois running back Mikel Leshoure with the 40th overall pick in the draft and eight in the second round. Those same reports and others suggest the Cowboys will take a defensive back with the second-round selection.

Barber is scheduled to make $4.25 million in 2011, almost $400,000 more than he did a season ago, the worst statistical season of his six-year career. In addition, Barber has a $500,000 roster bonus due on June 3 if a new collective bargaining agreement is reached by then. If the labor dispute is not resolved by June 3, the Cowboys do not have to pay Barber his roster bonus until the official start of the league year under a new CBA.
