Dallas Cowboys Eat Fine, Learn Rob Ryan’s Defense During Player-Only Workouts
The Dallas Cowboys were fined earlier this off-season for players interacting with defensive coordinator Rob Ryan despite NFL lockout rules prohibiting them from doing so. It turns out that fine was worth it. The Cowboys are currently conducting player-only workouts led by quarterback Tony Romo and thanks to that illegal contact, the players are learning Ryan’s complex defensive scheme.
“With a new system, I think the new system is bringing a little energy to the defensive side of the ball,” Romo said. “I don’t know if you can pinpoint how important it is to the defense learning a new system, the verbage, talking to the guys.”
Romo went on to say the defensive players “split up into a walkthrough period” to work on learning Ryan’s scheme during the workouts. The fact Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones wasn’t concerned with the fine suggests the lockout may soon end. Jones is excited his players are working together to prepare themselves for the 2011 season, whenever it may begin.
