Jerry Jones Among Owners in Secret NFL Labor Talks
Dallas Cowboys team owner Jerry Jones was among five NFL owners that met secretly with NFL commissioner Roger Goodell and DeMaurice Smith, the head of now decertified NFL Players Association (NFLPA), in Chicago on Wednesday. Federal mediator Magistrate Judge Arthur Boylan was in attendance and he cancelled scheduled mediated sessions next week so the players and owners can continue to negotiate in secret.
On Thursday, the two sides released a joint statement regarding the confidential meetings:
“The parties met pursuant to court mediation. Owners and players were engaged in confidential discussions before Chief Magistrate Judge Boylan. The court has ordered continued confidentiality of the mediation sessions.”
The two sides also met in a scheduled hearing in St. Louis on Thursday, but the fact they held an additional meeting definitely looks bright for the 2011 NFL season. Aside from Jones, the other owners at the confidential meeting include the Carolina Panthers’ Jerry Richardson, the New England Patriots’ Robert Kraft, the New York Giants’ John Mara and the Pittsburgh Steelers’ Art Rooney.
Many NFL owners were not aware of the meeting until after its conclusion as was the case with a majority of the players in the league. Despite both sides publicly saying they’re not budging in the negotiations that led to the NFL lockout, the talks have continued with court order.
