The mental mistakes of professional athletes can be baffling. They’re human and everyone makes mistakes, but most people’s mistakes aren’t being criticized by a team’s fan base on national television with a close game on the line. Dallas Cowboys running back Felix Jones was apparently unaware of the down-and-distance on the final play of his team’s 34-30 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday. On fourth and twenty with only 11 seconds to play, Jones caught a Tony Romo pass and ran out of bounds after gaining only seven yards. Then it hit him.

As previously mentioned, Jones’s mistake cannot be blown out of proportion; the game was already lost before the ball was even snapped. However, his unawareness of the situation illustrates the Cowboys’ lack of focus in crunch time.

Perhaps Jones might have made the first down or even a touchdown had he tried to advance the ball. No one will ever know because he didn’t. That’s mostly been the story of the Cowboys’ franchise over the past few years; some plays were so close to being great, but ended up forgotten. As the old saying goes, ‘close only counts in horseshoes and hand grenades.’ Unfortunately, the Cowboys will remain ‘close’ to being a great team once again until such mistakes are eliminated.

  1. Bill says:

This guy is soppose to be a professional and he needs to get his head out of his a** and into the game, but he’s not the only one to blame, ofcoarse Rome belongs there, but so does J Garrett, he suppose to be the coast and playcaller, but if if he does have a running game with that lead, kill the d*mn clock fool

  1. [...] It took two losses in four games due directly to Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo throwing extremely ill-timed interceptions for the Cowboys to install the scoreboards. It wasn’t just Romo, either; running back Tashard Choice ran out of bounds with the Cowboys were trying to run out the clock on the final, game-winning drive against the Washington Redskins in Week 3. Then on a fourth down play on Dallas’s last drive against the Detroit Lions a week later, running back Felix Jones darted out of bounds after a short catch because he forgot it was fourth down.
