Not surprisingly, public figures are ripping Tony Romo following the Dallas Cowboys’ 34-30 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday. Dallas gave up a 24-piont lead in the contest, the worst collapse in franchise history. On Tuesday, Cowboys Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders finally made the statement many Cowboys fans have thought for some time now: Dallas cannot win with Romo.

“Sooner or later we’ve just got to quit guessing and assuming that this guy is the guy to get you over the hump, and say, ‘You know what? This guy is always going to be great statistically, but he’s not that guy that can take you to where you want to go,’ “Sanders said. “And that’s the Super Bowl.”

Regardless of Romo’s inconsistent play, Cowboys players, head coach Jason Garrett and owner Jerry Jones have continued to publicly express their faith in him. Sanders also said Tuesday that he “liked” Romo, but then went on to say Cowboys fans cannot continue to invest their confidence in him.

“Dallas Cowboys fans are sick of it,” Sanders said. “We had him on our shoulders last week. ‘Oh Tony, he’s our king!’ But now we want to stone him. I’m serious, that’s the way [fans] feel about him because you can’t trust him. I like him. Statistically, he’s great, but you can’t trust him.”

Why Sanders threw in his awkward fondness of Romo is unknown, but his message was clear; Romo is not the Cowboys’ answer at quarterback and it’s time Jones does something about it. Of course, that’s extremely unlikely considering Romo was just given a contract extension through 2016. Indeed, Romo is good statistically; he threw three touchdown passes in Sunday’s loss. However, Sanders’s point was validated when Romo threw three second-half interceptions to fuel the Lions’ comeback. Whether or not Dallas makes a change at quarterback anytime soon, more and more Cowboys fans are beginning to agree with Sanders.
