It’s no secret Washington Redskins tight end Chris Cooley is an odd character. Now, one of the NFL’s most unique personalities is taking an equally as bizarre shot at Dallas Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo. Following the Cowboys’ 34-30 loss to the Detroit Lions on Sunday, a game in which Romo threw three second-half interceptions, Cooley made his odd comments on a Washington sports radio station on Tuesday. Cooley said he wants to fight Romo.

“For me to beat Tony? I’m gonna be honest, I don’t know what kind of cage fighting skills he has,” Cooley said. “I would probably try to incorporate my wrestling ability, like when I was in high school. Obviously it’s been awhile, but I didn’t like to beat people fast. I like to embarrass ‘em a little bit. Like, take a 24-point lead, and then just play with it a little bit.”

Cooley was referring to the Cowboys blowing a 24-point lead against Detroit in Sunday’s loss, the worst collapse in franchise history. Like Dallas Hall of Fame cornerback Deion Sanders said just hours earlier, Cooley made known his astonishment at Romo’s inconsistent play.

“It’s amazing, amazing to watch him choke like that,” Cooley said. “I’m just saying, [if] I’m up 24 points in the third quarter, if I’m the head coach, I feel like I could probably just take a knee for the rest of the game, punt it away and there’s no way that Detroit’s gonna drive on you that many times. The only way you’re gonna give up that many points is turnovers, right? It’s hilarious to watch him throw pick sixes, too, back to back. I loved it.”

The newly-wed Romo is highly unlikely to step into a cage with anyone, especially Cooley. It’s not uncommon for a player to take joy in a rival’s failures, but it’s just like Cooley to come up with something uncanny like his Tuesday statements. Neither Sanders’s nor Cooley’s comments will affect the Cowboys’ plan at quarterback, but their feelings reflect those of the Dallas faithful, perhaps even the cage remark.
