The Dallas Cowboys are serious about trading running back Tashard Choice following the team’s 20-16 loss to the New England Patriots on Sunday. Choice was forced into a brief starting role when Felix Jones left the game with an ankle injury. He only recorded 14 yards on five carries before fumbling the ball away and being replaced by rookie DeMarco Murray. Following the game, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said he has already received phone calls about dealing choice and is heavily considering doing so before Tuesday’s trade deadline.

I’ve driven the Choice bandwagon for quite some time now and did not think trading him was a good idea when such speculation surfaced during the preseason. After his performance through five games this season, I’m singing a different tune.

Choice talks a Pro Bowl game, but hasn’t played like it. This is a guy who’s recorded 100-yard rushing days more than once when given the chance, but he’s too inconsistent. Sometimes he runs hard like a determined NFL back and other times he kind of trots toward the line of scrimmage and gets tackled immediately.

The problem with trading Choice is what the Cowboys might (or might not) get in return for him. Jones is now determined to deal him, but that could be a bad thing if the Cowboys don’t get something decent in return for the fourth-year veteran.

Another problem with dealing Choice is Felix Jones’ durability issues. The Cowboys’ starter has played very well as the feature back this season, but his separated shoulder and twisted ankle don’t bode well going forward. If Choice is dealt, then Murray and fellow rookie running back Phillip Tanner would be the Cowboys’ rushing attack if Felix Jones missed a large amount of time due to injury.

That might not be a bad idea. Jerry Jones may be tired of trying to figure out Choice’s role in the Cowboys’ offense and ready to give Murray a bigger role and Tanner a chance to show he can play in the NFL.

Tanner was a preseason star this year, rushing for 128 yards on 24 carries for a whopping 6.0 average. Tanner beat out Lonyae Miller for a roster spot after Miller was basically crowned the Cowboys’ running back-in waiting.

Perhaps Jerry Jones is ready to move on in an even more youthful approach with Felix Jones as the starter and two rookies as the primary backups. However, Murray and Tanner won’t be just “backups” if Choice is dealt; both players will get their share of carries, especially after

Murray’s solid performance against the Patriots. Choice may be on his way out of Dallas, but let’s hope Jerry Jones doesn’t do anything rash to prove a point. The Cowboys need a good return on Choice, something that could be the missing piece to Dallas’ puzzle.
