Just two days after contradicting himself and publicly questioning his head coach, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones regretted his comments and backed Jason Garrett. Jones questioned Garrett’s play-calling at the end of the Cowboys’ 20-16 loss to the New England Patriots when the Cowboys ran the ball to run out the clock, but instead went three-and-out. From there, Patriots quarterback Tom Brady worked his magic and threw the game-winning touchdown pass with only seconds remaining in the game. Jones didn’t say Garrett did the right thing, but he did say he’s confident in his head coach going forward.

“I would say that probably if I had that to do over again, I wouldn’t comment, period,” Jones said. “I wouldn’t even answer a question about it. I was asked the questions and you can always say, ‘No comment.’

“But I did [comment], and I was real clear that this was a flip of the coin. That’s what Jason frankly is paid to do, is make those decisions, and there’s no one that I’d rather have make the decisions regarding our football team right now on an offensive play call.”

All that Jerry Speak still means Jones thinks Garrett should have passed on third down of the Cowboys’ final drive against the Patriots, but he wants to keep his image clean with the media. So to make sure we understood, he then repeated his point in English for those who don’t understand Jerry Speak.

“There’s absolutely no issue that I have with Jason Garrett’s play calling,” Jones said. “I want to get that real clear.”

However, Jones said that along with saying he still wants Garrett to allow Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo to throw the ball more.

“You want the ball in Romo’s hands,” Jones said. “This is the time to use his skill. That’s what Tony Romo brings you. He’ll get you a play when you need it the most. He’s a playmaker. That’s certainly a perspective.”

So basically we’re back to square one. Jones says he trusts Garrett and wants him calling the plays because he’s awesome, but then goes right back to letting Tony Romo play. If Romo had thrown an interception or had the ball tipped at the line or been sacked and fumbled at the end of the Patriots game, he would never have recovered mentally. The media would have gone bonkers again criticizing his performance in crunch time.

Jones is trying to salvage Romo’s reputation while protecting Garrett as well. Cowboys fans should be worried that Garrett is becoming a “Yes man” like several past Dallas coaches. Garrett passed the ball on the final drive of the Cowboys’ loss to the Lions in Week 4 and Jones said he should have done the opposite. Now Jones is switching that notion following the Patriots’ loss. Hopefully Garrett isn’t simply trying to please Jones; that has spelled doom for the Cowboys in recent years under coaches like Wade Phillips.

On one hand, Jones must be respected for continuing to support Romo through these turbulent times. On the flip side, Jones changing his mind on what Garrett should do in crunch time is nauseating. We’ll see if Jones, Garrett and Romo can all compromise on what should be done with a lead and the game on  the line next time around.
