When Jason Garrett took over as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys halfway through the 2010 season, he brought a sense of discipline and responsibility to the team that hadn’t been seen since Jimmy Johnson roamed the Texas Stadium sidelines. For whatever reason, Garrett has gone soft in 2011, sticking up for underachieving players the way Wade Phillips did before he was fired. Now Johnson and Pittsburgh Steelers Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw think Garrett isn’t the man for the job.

“He needs to become a head coach,” Johnson said. “It may be time to think — not for this year but for next year — hire an offensive coordinator to call the plays and be the head coach.”

Garrett’s offensive play-calling has been more inconsistent than his players’ effort this season. He gets them down the field easily and then can’t do anything in the red zone. It’s not just one or the other; Garrett’s play-calling and his players’ execution is killing the Cowboys near the goal line.

Unlike Johnson that’s not nearly the only reason Bradshaw is questioning Garrett’s status as the head coach of America’s Team. He agrees Garrett has gone soft, no longer holding his players responsible for their actions.

“He is not my kind of guy to be a head coach,” Bradshaw said. “That’s not the kind of coach I want. I know he’s smart; a lot of guys are smart out there but I like a guy who gets in people’s face, a guy like Jimmy, a guy like Chuck Noll.”

Garrett may have fallen into the old “yes man” mold of past Cowboys head coaches, the ones who didn’t make the cut; the ones who were fired because team owner Jerry Jones got tired of playing them like puppets.

The last man to actually coach this franchise brought three Super Bowls to it. That’s right; Johnson is responsible for all three Cowboys Super Bowl wins in the 1900s even though he was only the head coach for two of them. Garrett started off well last season, but now seems to have lost his edge. He’ll have to regain it if this team is ever to become anything more than mediocre.
