When the Buffalo Bills travel to Cowboys Stadium on Sunday, a Texas native will return home to face his favorite team as a kid in Fort Worth. Bills running back Fred Jackson attended Lamar High School in Arlington, the same city where he’ll face the Dallas Cowboys this week. On Wednesday, Jackson said he wears jersey No. 22 in honor of Cowboys Hall of Fame running back Emmitt Smith.
“I was a big Emmitt Smith fan,” Jackson said. “Playing running back and the things he was doing when he was with the Cowboys, I think everybody down there that plays running back wants to be just like him, me included. Definitely my idol. That’s why I wear No. 22 now.”
When the Cowboys moved from Irving to Arlington in 2009, a house that Jackson lived in growing up was torn down to make room for the construction of Cowboys Stadium. On Sunday, Jackson will attempt to continue his best NFL season and defeat the Cowboys to keep his Bills in the AFC East playoff race.
In his sixth season as a pro, Jackson is on pace for over 1,600 rushing yards. He currently ranks third in the NFL with 803 rushing yards through eight games, averaging over 100 yards per game. Dallas will have to come up with a dynamite game plan to slow down Jackson as the Cowboys’ defense has allowed two 100-yard rushers in the past two weeks.
