Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Takes Shot at Jimmy Johnson, Bill Parcells
Enough people made the statement that the Dallas Cowboys should hire an offensive coordinator that someone finally asked Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett about it. Garrett replied with an humble “no” so that someone then went to Cowboys owner Jerry Jones, who gave a more colorful answer and took shots at two of his ex-coaches in the process.
“Jimmy was what I call a walk-around coach,” Jones said. “[Bill] Parcells was a walk-around coach. Joe Gibbs is a guy who believes that the head coach needs to be in charge of either the offense or the defense and needs to be the coordinator. It brings you stature; it involves you in the game and gives you more respect with the players. It’s different schools of thought. I’ve always thought that Jason Garrett could handle coordinating as well as being the head coach.”
Now obviously Garrett said more than just “no” and gave his former coach credit and expressed his for Johnson.
“I do have a tremendous amount of respect for coach Johnson,” Garrett said. “I had the good fortune of playing for him for two years and have learned a tremendous amount of football from him. When he was a head coach, just seeing how he operated. And since then, in many conversations that he and I have had.
“That could be an opinion he might have and other people might have. But right now, we feel good about the structure we have on our staff and that is what we will do going forward.”
Garrett is a great offensive coordinator until the Cowboys get into the red zone. Then he seems to lose his ability to call plays well. On Wednesday, ESPN Dallas’ Ben Rogers jokingly tweeted Dallas should hire a red zone coach to take over when the Cowboys’ offense gets near the goal line.
Regardless, Jones isn’t going to hire an offensive coordinator. He clearly said he likes having a head coach that also calls plays and Garrett is just that. Whether or not he gets better at it in the red zone remains a mystery, but Jones’ stubbornness is not. In the meantime, let the Jerry Jones – Jimmy Johnson feud continue.

[...] Jerry Jones believes that coaches who don’t call plays aren’t complete coaches; he calls them &#…. He can believe what he wants, but those are Super Bowl-winning coaches who knew what they were doing. If you don’t think Jerry Jones is in the way of the Cowboys’ success after that little remark and this Callahan nonsense, you might be as loony as him. [...]
