Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones usually doesn’t count his team out of any contest. However, his coaches and players are cautious of their home game against the Philadelphia Eagles on Christmas Eve. The Eagles dominated the Cowboys 34-7 when the two teams last met in October and Jones admits fear of Saturday’s critical NFC East matchup.
“After the butt-kicking they gave us up in Philadelphia, I’m scared,” Jones said. “It’s that kind of feeling. The respect turns into being afraid of what they can do to you if you have some breakdowns out there — so you can put that ‘scared’ there if you want to. I think sometimes I know I do my best when I’m scared.”
The problem with Jones’ statement is the end; he’s not the one taking the field. Regardless if Jones is scared of the Eagles, it’s the Cowboys players who do or don’t need to be worried, depending on one’s point of view.
On Monday, Cowboys linebacker DeMarcus Ware and defensive coordinator Rob Ryan both expressed their focus and confidence heading into what could potentially be an NFC East-clinching game for Dallas. Jones may be at his best when he’s scared, but the Cowboys are not.
Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo has been hot the past two weeks and Dallas needs him to be the opposite of scared when the Eagles invade Cowboys Stadium Saturday afternoon. He will need to continue to play well and hope Ryan’s defense performs better against Philadelphian than it did eight weeks ago.
The Cowboys absolutely cannot be scared of the Eagles in this crucial NFC East matchup. Jones might be blowing smoke to the media or he might literally be nervous regarding this game. Regardless, Dallas must be ready and confident, not scared.
