Dallas Cowboys: 10 Cornerbacks to Consider Signing in 2012

Matthew Emmons-US PRESSWIRE
The Dallas Cowboys desperately need some new cornerbacks. Besides Mike Jenkins, the Cowboys have no one who can cover opposing receivers in man or zone coverage at the level a Rob Ryan-coached defense should.
Terence Newman’s lingering groin injury from 2008 is aging him faster than normal and it’s showing. Unsurprisingly, Orlando Scandrick isn’t playing up to the big contract he recently received and needs to go. Alan Ball is worthless and Frank Walker was just a free agent signee fill-in. Walker could stay as a nickel guy, but the Cowboys have to get rid of the rest and find some help for Jenkins.
Fortunately, there are several marquee free agent cornerbacks that will be available in the upcoming offseason. This list contains 10 guys that could make in impact for the Cowboys in a variety of ways. Each brings a different skill set to the table, but also a way to incorporate those talents into Ryan’s unique coaching style.

[...] Fortunately, Ball was only signed to a 1-year deal this past offseason, so he will be looking for work in January. Jones would be nuts to re-sign him again after this disastrous season. There can be no excuses for ‘almost’ making those deals in 2012. [...]

[...] Now if Cowboys owner Jerry Jones signs a top-notch free agent cornerback or two and a marquee pass rusher before the end of April, then Dallas could consider taking Barron if Abram Elam isn’t re-signed. But here’s a little secret: Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan likes Elam, so he’ll probably be back regardless of his performance in 2011. [...]

[...] The Cowboys have a large selection of veteran free agent cornerbacks in this year’s class, but none more intriguing than Finnegan. Guys like the San Francisco 49ers’ Carlos Rogers and the Atlanta Falcons’ Brent Grimes are solid choices, but Finnegan presents a fiery style of play the Cowboys are missing on defense. It takes some attitude to make a defense like Ryan’s click. [...]
