Jerry Jones Guarantees “Changes” for Dallas Cowboys in 2012

Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Sunday things will be different with this team in 2012. The Cowboys finished 8-8 in 2011, good enough for third place in the NFC East (or bad enough, depending on your point of view). This isn’t the first time Jones has promised change, but this time it’s desperately needed.

“We’ll make some changes. I’ll assure you we’ll make changes,” Jones said. “When you work for yourself, there’s not but one thing to change – that’s what’s in that mirror. I’ve had to make some pretty drastic changes in my time.”

Unless Jones hires a real general manager for the Cowboys, he won’t change what he sees in the mirror. The only drastic changes in Jones’ time with the Cowboys included changing coaches from Tom Landry to Jimmy Johnson in 1989 and then running Johnson out of town following back-to-back Super Bowl championships.

However, Jones can give Dallas its best chance to win in a long time by making the right changes before the 2012 season. Another Super Bowl title would make redeem Jones for all the years of failure since the turn of the century.

Jones is off to a good start; he let secondary coach Dave Campo walk on Monday and Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett said changes would come with the players. Garrett spoke specifically about the Cowboys’ cornerbacks, saying the team would “definitely address that area.” However, everyone knows Jones makes the final call on such changes. It will be very interesting to see if Jones follows through on this promise.
