The Dallas Cowboys have already found a new defensive backs coach; on Tuesday, the Cowboys hired former Cleveland Browns secondary coach Jerome Henderson. Cowboys defensive coordinator Rob Ryan lobbied for this move as Henderson coached under him in Cleveland in 2009 and 2010. Henderson replaces Dave Campo, whom the Cowboys parted ways with on Monday.

In 2011, Henderson’s secondary was the second best in the NFL, allowing only 184.9 yards per game and 16 touchdowns while recording nine interceptions. Henderson’s decision to leave Cleveland speaks volumes about Ryan as the Cowboys’ secondary ranked near the bottom of the NFL barrel this season.

Thus, Henderson’s move foreshadows personnel changes in the Cowboys’ secondary, something Dallas team owner Jerry Jones guaranteed on Sunday. The 42-year-old Henderson got his first coaching job with the New York Jets in 2007 as an assistant defensive backs coach. Henderson was promoted to head defensive backs coach the following year, the same season Jets cornerback Darrelle Revis broke onto the scene as arguably the best at his position in the NFL.

Henderson also garners some respect as a former player. The Virginia product was drafted by the New England Patriots in the second round of the 1991 NFL draft. He played safety through 1998 with the Patriots, Buffalo Bills, Philadelphia Eagles and Jets. In 33 career starts, Henderson recorded nine interceptions and one sack.
