The Dallas Cowboys have finally signed a high-profile free agent cornerback to replace Terence Newman, who was cut on Tuesday. Less than 20 hours later, the Cowboys signed former Kansas City Chiefs cornerback Brandon Carr to a 5-year, $50.1 million deal. This leaves Dallas with a little cap room left to spend this off-season after the Cowboys restructured the contracts of Orlando Scandrick and Doug Free following the release of David Buehler and Newman.

Carr is a great addition for a team with one of the worst pass defenses in the NFL over the last two seasons. After Cortland Finnegan signed with the St. Louis Rams, Eric Wright agreed to a deal with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Carlos Rogers re-signed with the San Francisco 49ers, the Cowboys could not afford to let Carr leave Valley Ranch without a contract. In the end, Jerry Jones gave Carr a very rich deal with $26.5 million guaranteed.

Carr has knocked down 28 passes over the past two seasons, second only to the Cleveland Browns‘ Joe Haden, with 30. Carr will be 26 when the 2012 NFL season starts, so he’ll be Dallas’ top cornerback over the next five years, barring an injury like the one that doomed Newman.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones has been promising a big splash in free agency for years, but it never happened. He all but guaranteed the Cowboys had landed Nnamdi Asomugha last off-season less than an hour before Asomugha actually signed with the Philadelphia Eagles. Now Jones has actually brought some help to Dallas’ secondary, albeit long overdue. Cowboys fans better hope Jones isn’t done spending yet.

Cowboys free agent receiver Laurent Robinson and fullback Tony Fiammetta are both free agents and the team desperately needs to re-sign both. In addition, another proven veteran cornerback and/or safety would be nice additions this off-season. The Carr signing is huge for the Cowboys, but Dallas isn’t done if Jerry Jones plans on making this team a contender.
