The Dallas Cowboys have done a great job addressing needs in free agency this off-season and apparently aren’t done yet. Less than a week after Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said his team is still looking to sign more free agents, Dallas head coach Jason Garrett says he wants a very specific type of players, but his description of that is not what you might expect.

“We want a guy who has an ego,” Garrett said. “Egos are important. But ego in the context of what we’re trying to accomplish as a team. Guys who are willing to work, are great teammates – there’s always going to be a place for those guys.”

Garrett is referring to guys like Michael Irvin, the Hall of Fame receiver he called a teammate in Dallas from 1993 to ‘99. Irvin had an ego, but it was exactly like the one Garrett described – “ego in the context of what we’re trying to accomplish as a team.”

The Cowboys don’t have any players that have swagger. Sure, receiver Dez Bryant mouths to defensive backs and tries to act the part, but he doesn’t possess that killer instinct, either. Not even star linebacker Sean Lee, the best player on the Cowboys’ roster, has what Garrett wants.

Cowboys legendary safety Darren Woodson recently said Dallas doesn’t need a “Ray Lewis-type leader.” He clarified by saying the Cowboys don’t need someone who will give “rah rah” speeches, but instead someone who will lead by example.

That’s also true, but Dallas already has someone who does that; Lee never misses a tackle and seems to always be around the ball at the right time. What the Cowboys don’t have is a player who always makes big plays and makes his teammates better through enthusiastic play. As good as Lee is, no one can argue he’s pretty mild-mannered for an NFL linebacker.

Garrett often has a hard time explaining exactly what he means with that Princeton education language. This time, though, his message is relatively clear with a slight translation: the Cowboys need guys like Irvin who will make plays and cause their teammates to do the same by example. That’s not the definition of a leader; that’s the definition of a winner.

Demarcus Ware is the best player on the Cowboys roster, Tony Romo is probably the second, then you can start talking about Sean Lee… maybe.

  2. Bob Womble says:

Swagger is an overused term in my opinion. Confidence is necessary, self important egotism isn’t worth one thin dime.
