Sean Lee: Penn State Scandal Should Have Been Handled Differently
Dallas Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee is the next big thing in the NFL. He’s arguably the best player on the Cowboys’ roster and he’s an outstanding young man on and off the field. However, a mark on his resume has been tarnished as the Jerry Sandusky scandal at Penn State seems to get worse every day. Lee played his college football at Penn State from 2005-2009 under Joe Paterno, whose statue in front of Beaver Stadium was taken down on Sunday. The Nittany Lions’ victories since 1998 have been vacated, including those accumulated while Lee played. On Monday, Lee spoke to the media while appearing at a Boys and Girls Club charity event.
“Obviously I don’t support the actions of how they handled that situation at all,” Lee said. “The facts have shown they didn’t report Sandusky and what happened and because of it more kids got hurt. That’s what the facts show and I don’t agree with that at all. This should’ve been reported right away. There should’ve been procedures in place where this is what we do, investigation and go from there and more kids wouldn’t have been hurt. I actually think the Freeh Report was a good thing because it shows where Penn State can go, how they can improve on some things so something as horrible as it did will never happen again.”
Spoken like a true professional. Other past players from Penn State, including NFL Hall of Famers, have basically excused their alma mater for the scandal because of what the football team has accomplished on the field. Not Lee. He has more class than that. He doesn’t care about the statue being taken down.
“It’s a statue,” Lee said. “They keep it up, they pull it down; that’s not what I feel the issue is. What I feel the issue is, is to make sure the healing process for these victims is taken care of. Now if taking the statue down helps with the healing process, then so be it.”
Lee also doesn’t care about the vacated wins.
“There’s obviously the memories that you have, so that was done for whatever reason but as a teammate and former player you realize what you did as a team and what accomplished,” Lee said. “Your memories will always be there so that’s not what bothers me.”
The Cowboys have been accused of lacking a leader on the field, primarily on defense. Lee’s final statements regarding the Penn State scandal pretty much sum up the fact he’s already accepted that role with Dallas.
“Like I said, supporting Penn State going forward does not mean you support the actions of what happened up there,” Lee said. “There are a lot of good people that want to…impact the community in a good way. They want to support the team. They want to bring the positive about this horrible negative that happened up there.”
Perhaps Lee can help the Cowboys’ defense overcome the past two horrible seasons it’s endured.
