On Friday, defensive back Tyrann Mathieu was dismissed from the LSU Tigers football team for violating team and school policies. LSU head coach Les Miles would not specify which rules when asked, but it’s clear it had to be something serious considering the program has done nothing more than slap players on the wrist for even the worst offenses in the past.

Mathieu was a Heisman Trophy finalist in 2011 despite a one-game suspension mid-season due to a failed drug test. He was considered a top 10 pick in the 2013 NFL Draft until being dismissed from the team. Now his future is in jeopardy, regardless of whether he transfers to another school and gets to play the 2012 NCAA football season.

This all sounds really familiar; the Dallas Cowboys used a first-round draft pick on a player that missed the majority of his junior season for violating certain policies and he hasn’t been worth the trouble after two seasons. Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant has been too much trouble to justify his 1,489 yards and 15 touchdowns over two injury-plagued seasons. His potential is unlimited, but he can’t seem to stay out of trouble.

Mathieu isn’t the same player; he’s worse. Bryant may seem to be in trouble all the time, but he’s never failed a drug test, which is a whole different kind of problem.

Some team will take a chance on Mathieu in the 2013 NFL Draft due to his raw athletic potential, but he’s not worth it. Regardless of when the Cowboys pick in the first round of next year’s draft, the Dallas faithful should hope and pray Mathieu is off the board because team owner Jerry Jones won’t be able to pass up the opportunity to bring yet another troublemaker to his mentally weak team.

Mathieu’s draft card has Jones’ name written all over it. After Terrell Owens, Tank Johnson, Pacman Jones and Bryant, why wouldn’t Jones take a chance on the former LSU superstar? He wouldn’t hesitate for one second and that should scare the willies out of Cowboys fans.

If you’re rolling your eyes and thinking ‘what’s the harm?’ then you’ve been living under a rock the past two seasons while the Cowboys have stumbled through a coaching change and more fourth-quarter collapses than any previous time in franchise history en route to a 14-18 combined record. Yep, Dallas definitely needs another player that will make five big plays and then screw up the next 10 before missing the rest of the season to a suspension and/or injury.

If Cowboys head coach Jason Garrett has a spine (don’t hold your breath on that), he should put his foot down about drafting Mathieu. But don’t worry; he won’t. If you spend whatever overpriced NFL jerseys cost these days on a Mathieu thread with a star on each sleeve, you should probably just stop watching football altogether.

5 Rants to “Dallas Cowboys Should Steer Clear of Tyrann Mathie...”

  1. J says:

The Dallas Cowboys didn’t draft Terrel Owens, Tank Johnson, or Adam Jones. You’re creating a pattern out of nothing, and if you actually paid attention to the Cowboys instead of just using them as a way to farm traffic, you’d realize that Jerry has taken a step back, and his VP Stephen Jones has stepped up, and Jason Garrett has more control of the Cowboys than any coach since Jimmy Johnson. Jerry didn’t trade up for Mo Claiborne, his Son Stephen Jones did, and he forced the Rams to honor their commitment they made pre-draft to do the swap if Claiborne was available. When the time came they tried to squeeze another pick out of us, and Stephen Jones made them hold to their deal that was initially offered. Do some research.

  2. Scott P says:

Hello??? Do you have any clue about the current state of the Cowboy’s roster? Do you not know that the Cowboys gave Brandon Carr a 5yr/$50M contract this year? Do you not know that the Cowboys selected Morris Claiborne 6th in the draft this year?

Why in the world do the Cowboys need another CB?

There is nothing to tie the Cowboys to this guy — yet you used it for a nice anti-Cowboy rant.

As for Dez Bryant, the word out of training camp is that he’s been dominating.

“Mathieu’s draft card has Jones’ name written all over it”
And why not the Patriots or the Eagles? They’ve both taken chances with high-risk players.

Let me give you a clue about building a good football team … you need to take chances. Playing it safe does not get you to the promised land. You need to pay X to get 10X — while knowing that you may pay X and get 0. The Patriots traded a 4th round pick to get Randy Moss and ended up with one of the most dominating seasons a WR has ever put up. The Eagles took a chance on Vick (as radioactive a player as ever been in this league) and were able to both dump their superstar QB (McNabb) for a couple high picks and the heir-apparent (i.e., Kevin Kolb) to Arizona for a good CB and a high draft pick.

The Patriots are looking at Plaxico right now despite his well-known history. You don’t win football games with boy scouts. You win football games with quality football players. If you are afraid to take a chance on a guy (because of personal reasons, injury history, low-level college competition, etc.), you won’t be rewarded with paying little for a guy yet getting a lot in return.

  3. Aaron Eisenman says:

    “Leave a Rant”…how appropriate.

Seriously? I have no qualms with not drafting Mathieu next year. However to say that Dallas will draft him next year, and then say why Dallas will draft him because he is a “troubled player” then use One Guy that Dallas has drafted(Dez Bryant, who BTW wasn’t expelled from the team, but was suspended by The NCAA)to show why Dallas will draft him. is Lazy. Stupid Journalism.

Terrell Owens, Tank Johnson, Pacman Jones were all UFA’s that were brought in on cheap “show me” deals. They were not Drafted by them.

And Exactly what “trouble” has Bryant Gotten into that is so bad that:

“too much trouble to justify his 1,489 yards and 15 touchdowns over two injury-plagued seasons.”
