If any of the Dallas Cowboys wide receivers are going to make a push for the third spot on the depth chart, the time is now. There’s no need to mince words in this column, just like there is no better time for these receivers to step up than right now.

If the current receivers don’t want to lose their spot on the Cowboys roster to an outside veteran, these next 10 days are extremely important. We’ve all heard about which receiver had a good day of practice and seems to be leading the race, only to have a bad practice or drop the next day. We heard that Cole Beasley looked great early in camp, but then he left. He came back and has looked good again, but can he solidify himself at the third receiver spot?

Then the focus was shifted to Raymond Radway, who was starting to look like the guy, but he faded. Next up was Andre Holmes, who had a very good game against the Oakland Raiders, but that momentum hasn’t translated to the field since then. Tim Benford had a spell of time where he impressed, but where is his name now?

Last week, both Kevin Ogletree and Beasley had very nice games against the San Diego Chargers. This appears to have separated them from the other receivers for now. I think it’s the “for now” part that worries Cowboys fans. There doesn’t seem to be any consistency in anyone’s game right now and that is a concern.

I said early in camp that the Cowboys needed to hold off on signing a veteran wide receiver and see what the young guys could do, something I still believe in, just less enthusiastically. It seems to me that the Cowboys have a group of guys that are competing for a number four receiver role instead of the number three spot and it increases the likelihood they will bring in a veteran receiver after roster cuts.

With two preseason games remaining, we need to see someone step up as the third receiver. They finally have gotten fifth round draft pick Danny Coale on the field, which is a nice addition, but he is probably too far behind to make a difference at this point so it’s up to you, Ogletree. And you too, Beasley, Holmes, Benford and Radway.

Patience is a virtue, but it also runs thin when you need a third wide receiver in the NFL.
