Brett Davis-US PRESSWIRE

Now that Dallas Cowboys cornerback Mike Jenkins has been activated from the PUP list, would the Cowboys think about trading him? Be honest, have you thought much about Mike Jenkins at all this preseason?  Me either.

However, with the new rules agreed upon today by the NFL and the NFLPA, trading Jenkins is a possibility. The agreement has pushed back the trade deadline from week 6, to week 8 of the NFL season.

This could help a team like the Cowboys possibly trade Jenkins when his value would be at its highest, during the season. It also gives the Cowboys and the league two extra weeks to evaluate the health and play of Jenkins. Obviously first things first, Jenkins needs to show he is healthy.

Of course this is all speculation and I like value of having four solid cornerbacks on the roster but the idea not that far fetched. Jenkins and his agent have let it be known they are not happy with his current contract situation and if it becomes a distraction, the Cowboys could conceivably trade Jenkins.

On the other hand, Jerry Jones has spoken to Jenkins and assured him that he is in the team’s plans for the upcoming season. Jones said in May, “No one needs Mike Jenkins more than the Cowboys.” So a trade does seem unlikely.

I’d rather hold onto Jenkins because, as the saying goes, you can never have enough corners. The NFL is now a passing league and having as many good cornerbacks on your roster as possible is always a smart move. However, the Cowboys defense looked pretty solid without him in the preseason and barring an injury to one of their other cornerbacks before the trade deadline I can’t totally dismiss the idea, especially if it brought back a solid offensive lineman. Or, of course, a wide receiver.

Football is a brutal game and there is no telling when or where injuries will hit. Week 8 is a long time off so it’s impossible to know what team would be in position to trade for Jenkins or what the Cowboys record will be by then. The good news is that Jenkins is off the PUP list and the Cowboys will get the opportunity to see how Jenkins plays before making any decisions.

It’s not the thought of trading of Jenkins I like, but the options the new deadline provides.
