Just recently John Elway, the vice president of football operations for the Denver Broncos, stated that Tim Tebow deserves to start the 2012 season as the starting QB. I truly believe he will stick to this statement. Here is where he could get by with saying that and still deep down know that he doesn’t think Tebow is the answer and maybe not even for 2012.

That statement could easily be true as long as Tebow is taking reps with the first team in training camp, preseason, and maybe week 1, but he could easily have tough QB competition and lose that spot early on. This is how comments can look good for the media and guys like Elway still get what they want in the end. I’m not saying Elway is going to try this or do this, but you can bet there will be competition and Tebow will have to improve to keep his spot.

I came across this article in my Jan 30th Sports Illustrated. Chris Collinsworth stated this in the article:

“Our job in the media is to say here’s what they said, and here’s what they meant,” Collinsworth said. “Elway thinks Tebow should be given the chance to be the quarterback, but the Broncos are going to keep looking. Their shopping cart is not full at the quarterback position.”

My opinion is that the Denver Broncos will indeed pick up a free agent QB and draft one in the later rounds to develop also. Brady Quinn is a free agent.

I think the Broncos will take a look at free agent QB’s Matt Flynn and Chad Henne. Flynn tossed 6 touchdown passes in the season finale for the Green Bay Packers while Aaron Rodgers sat out to get ready for the playoffs. Flynn has been groomed behind Rodgers for the last few years much like Rodgers was groomed behind Brett Favre. Flynn’s price tag, however, will be steep. Chad Henne has not lived up to expectations in Miami although he started the year off great before getting injured to end his season. Henne will come much cheaper if the Broncos decide to go that route. Another option will be Kevin Kolb; there has been word Arizona may decide to cut Kolb. There are also rumors the Cardinals will trade for Peyton Manning.

As far as the draft goes, I do not see the Broncos choosing a QB in the first round. They have the 25th pick and Luck and Griffin will be gone by then. Plus, they have a first-round QB that was drafted two years ago in Tebow. They really need to bulk up the defensive front and solidify the secondary. I do think they will draft a QB in the later rounds and here are a few I think they will consider:

If Ryan Tannehill from Texas A&M or Nick Foles from Arizona fall to the late 2nd round they will be tough to pass up. If the Broncos miss out here or draft other needs I think they should take Brandon Weeden from Oklahoma State by the 4th round. Weeden posted numbers very similar to Andrew Luck and it is likely that he was left off the Heisman ballot because of his age. He is 28 and that is also why he may fall to the 4th round. If the Broncos miss Tannehill and Foles, I hope they gamble on Weeden.

These decisions should only help make for a great QB competition and put a little pressure on Tebow to improve. If he improves then he should be the quarterback. If he doesn’t, maybe Denver should consider other starting options.

Only time will tell.

3 Rants to “Chris Collinsworth: Denver Broncos Not Set on Tim ...”

  1. Joe says:

John Elway is not the general manager of the Broncos, he’s vice president of football operations. Brian Xanders is GM. Also Elway did not say Tebow deserves to start “the season” he said training camp.

  2. Derek says:

Chris Collinsworth is a moron with only negative things to say. I wish Al Michaels would punch him in the throat!

  3. Birdie says:

DISAGREE…Gee, stop already with stirring the pot. What happened last year in training camp? What was heard, Tebow didn’t set training camp on fire, therefore, he didn’t take the position away from Orton? Anyone who doesn’t live under a rock saw during the football season that Tebow is a gamer. Training camp may not show the entire picture with him. Yes, improvements need to be made, but does anyone really think that Tebow will not be the starter for Week 1? Denver will riot if that happened.
