Corners The Denver Broncos Should Target In Free Agency
The Denver Broncos just finished up an exciting 2011 season that ended in the AFC divisional round vs. the New England Patriots. The Broncos finished 8-8 in the regular season and won the AFC West division. There are many needs on the Broncos’ roster if they want to keep contending and expand on their successes they had in 2011. Here is a look at the corner position, which I think the Broncos need to upgrade at the most for 2012:
High Priced Choice:
Cortland Finnegan age 28 -
Finnegan is a Pro Bowl-caliber player that will be looking for a salary that ranks with the best corners in the league. With Tennessee this year he recorded 75 tackles, 1 sack, and 1 int while breaking up 11 other passes. If you team him and Champ Bailey up on the other side you will still have a top corner tandem for 3 or 4 more years. This will give the Broncos time to develop some young prospects at the position as well. Finnegan would demand a salary around the 5-year, 50 mil range.
Better Value Choice:
Brandon Carr age 25 -
Carr is a great #2 corner; he has played opposite of Brandon Flowers the last few years and has held his own when opposing QBs try to pick on him. He is great in run support as he made 45 tackles this year and also managed 4 INTs and broke up 15 more passes. It would also be good to pry him away from division rival Kansas City. The Broncos could probably get away with signing Carr for 6 or 7 years under top corner money. I would say a contract for 5 years and somewhere around 25 mil, which is about half of what the top corners are asking these days.
I think the best thing for the Broncos would be to go after Carr or a player like Carr. They would save a lot of money and Carr could still potentially be a top notch corner in the future.
