Brock Osweiler, QB Arizona State (Round 2, Pick 57 Overall)

The Denver Broncos took a QB in the 2nd round of the 2012 NFL Draft when they selected Brock Osweiler. Just weeks after signing Peyton Manning, and when many thought the Broncos should be drafting players to help Manning, they took another QB that can be groomed by Manning for a couple of years.

In a perfect world Manning plays great for about 3 years, retires as a Bronco, and Osweiler is the next Aaron Rodgers.  It seems the Broncos are taking the same approach that the Green Bay Packers took with Brett Favre, Aaron Rodgers, and Matt Flynn. If it all works out maybe the Broncos will end up with Brock Osweiler being the new Aaron Rodgers or a Matt Flynn that will be big time trade bait in about 3 years.

Brett Favre was already in Green Bay and was the fans favorite when the Packers drafted Rodgers late in the 1st round, Rodgers sat, learned, and became the next great QB for the Packers. The Broncos are most likely leaning towards the Rodgers strategy in that they are hoping that Osweiler learns enough from Manning that when he retires Osweiler can step right in and the Broncos wont miss a beat.

John Elway loves Osweiler. He is massive at 6’7″ tall and weighs 242 pounds. He has impressive speed and agility and is a natural leader. Osweiler also has above average arm strength but needs time to develop into a polished passer. I think Osweiler is a lot like Elway as a QB. The question that we will have to wait on an answer for is if it was too early to draft a successor to Manning.

Some similarities but also some major differences. Aaron Rodgers was a much more highly regarded prospect than Osweiler. He was a potential #1 pick and probably should have been. Mike McCarthy was OC of the 49ers and when he brought in Rodgers for a workout, he said it was the best workout by a QB he’s ever seen. That guy knows QBs and has worked with some very good ones. Mike Nolan botched that draft big time.

Also, the Packers didn’t draft Rodgers with the plan to groom him for 3 years. From 2005 on Favre threatened to retire every single year after that. It seems a lot of Favre apologists fail to recognize how inconsiderate he was to the team. Rodgers was just flat out their best player on the board. He was likely the Packers highest graded football player in the entire draft and happened to fall to them at #24. Its been said that Ted Thompson was shocked that Rodgers was still on the board. A bunch of other teams really dropped the ball in that draft. The Packers drafted Rodgers because he was a highly rated prospect that shouldn’t have still been on the board and they didn’t know how much longer Favre would be around.

It should also be noted that Rodgers learned from McCarthy not Favre. Brett Favre despised the fact that Green Bay used a 1st round pick on Aaron Rodgers and publicly stated it wasn’t his job to mentor Aaron Rodgers. I think the notion of veteran players mentoring young players is way overhyped. I think its sad how little credit Rodgers himself gets for the player that he’s become. People seem to think that simply sitting behind a HOF QB makes a guy a great QB. Tell Curtis Painter that.

There’s a lot of truth in that response. Manning will help a young guy way more than Favre. I almost chose to write the article comparing what the Packers did with Matt Flynn, maybe that would have been a better comparison, but I still think the Broncos are trying to do what the Packers did with Rodgers. I do agree that Rodgers was at a different level than Osweiler, but the Broncos are hoping for the best here. If nothing else maybe Osweiler will be good trade bait in a couple years.

      • Chris says:

Peyton Manning is certainly much more classy than Brett Favre. I’m sure he’ll be much more helpful towards Osweiler than Favre was to Rodgers. I just constantly hear people discrediting Rodgers because he sat behind Favre. Plenty of QBs have sat behind a great QB for a few years. They didn’t all turn into a HOF caliber player themselves.

The fact is Rodgers is the most complete talent at QB in the NFL. That is natural talent. Not something that can be acquired by sitting behind a veteran QB. There isn’t another QB that possesses Rodgers ability to scramble for first downs and make plays out of the pocket at the same time being among the best precision pocket passers in the game. Former great QBs like Joe Theisman, Phil Simms, and Boomer Esiason have said they’ve never seen a guy throw a football better than Rodgers. He has one of the strongest arms in the NFL and is one of the most accurate passers in NFL history. Maybe THE most accurate passer ever. His mechanics needed some fine-tuning out of college which McCarthy helped him fix.

That is where people get it wrong. Sitting for a few years was very beneficial to Rodgers. It allowed Mike McCarthy to fine-tune his mechanics and really learn the offense. It should be noted that Mike McCarthy is a top-notch offensive mind and brilliant QB coach. He developed Rich Gannon into an MVP caliber player. Matt Hasselbeck credits much of his success to the time he spent with McCarthy in Green Bay. McCarthy brought Favre’s career out of the gutter. Look at what Favre was doing before McCarthy got there. Favre had arguably his best season as a Packers under Mike McCarthy. The concept of sitting a QB for a few years is fundamentally sound. You have to have the right coaching to develop him though. It isn’t really the job of fellow players to coach younger players. Favre was right about that. I don’t understand where some people get the idea that players are coaching other players. They really don’t have time for that. Peyton Manning is who he is because of how much time he puts into working out and studying film. Its the coaches job to develop and coach up younger players.
