Denver Broncos rookie Ronnie Hillman may have the edge as the Broncos’ No. 2 running back. Willis McGahee is the sure starter, but the guy that will be the backup and the the “change-of-pace” back hasn’t been decided yet.

Hillman returned to practice on Saturday after he missed a week and the first preseason game against the Chicago Bears, in which the Broncos won 31-3. Hillman was held back while nursuing an injured hamstring.

If he can get through the rest of the month and contribute in the preseason games, Hillman should have a great chance to land the No. 2 RB spot and provide a change of pace from McGahee, and perhaps a big role as the third down back in passing situations.

He is competing with Lance Ball and Knowshon Moreno.

Hillman has received many comparisons to fellow San Diego State graduate and Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk. Hillman and Faulk are built alike and are both very shifty pass-catching backs. If Hillman turns out to be anything like Faulk then he should be a major upgrade over Ball and Moreno, a former first-round pick.

Moreno has had a couple seasons to prove his worth and the only thing that he has proved is that he is not worth the money the Broncos are expected to pay him over the next couple of years. Moreno is earning around $1 million for this year and in 2013, but in 2014 the Broncos will have to decide whether to give him $5 million or let him go via free agency.

Moreno will either be cut before 2014 or the Broncos will let him become a free agent before they have to pay him $5 million. With that being said, I think the Broncos would prefer Hillman over Moreno as long as Hillman is as good or better, and I don’t think it will take much for that to happen.

  1. Jim Brooks Jr says:

My son & I have followed Ronnie Hillman from before the draft. I don’t know about his durability, but when he’s reasonably healthy, he WILL be an asset to our Broncos. How much so remains to be seen but if he can get an initial strong block, he will generate a lot of excitement in the stands ! I loved TD when he played ( what Bronco fan didn’t ) and Hillman is not quite the same type of runner, but I believe he will provide that kind of excitement. JB

I can’t wait to see Hillman in action…hopefully he proves to be a perfect complement to McGahee.

  2. Carl Constant says:

Don’t know about Hillman’s chances….but AGREE about No-Show Moreno ! BUT, contrary to “popular opinion”…I think that Xavier Omon might be a WINNER and perform WELL at 2nd spot behind Willis McGahee. He showed “potential” in the preseason opener against the Chicago Bears.

    • Mark Stringer says:

Yes Omon looked good as well…I hope someone steps up because I think we both agree that Knowshon is done.
