Howard Smith-US PRESSWIRE

The Denver Nuggets acquired Andre Iguodala pending league approval from the Philadelphia 76ers, and send Aaron Afflalo and Al Harrington to the Orlando Magic as a part of a 4 team deal. The big prize in the blockbuster trade is, Dwight Howard who is headed to Los Angeles Lakers. All of the talk, of course, is about Howard and the Lakers but the Nuggets are a better team after this trade.

Iguodala is not a superstar but he’s close to being on that next level, he is currently playing for the United States Olympic Team in London. He’s a two guard who can score from the outside and take the ball to the basket, two things that the Nuggets have been missing for a long time. Denver does not have a “superstar” but they do have a lot of really good players, and Iguodala might be the missing piece. Now before everyone gets too excited, I am talking about being competitive and making some noise in the playoffs. With this trade, the Lakers have to be overwhelming favorites in the western conference next season along with the Oklahoma City Thunder.

This trade does, however, move the Nuggets into a spot where they should be able to contend for one of the top 4 seeds and win a playoff series or two. Head coach, George Karl now has a rotation that includes; Iguodala, Ty Lawson, Danilo Gallinari, Kenneth Faried and more of those types of players. As mentioned earlier, the Nuggets won’t have that one player who can beat you by himself but they now have a bunch of very good players, and if they can play well together then the Nuggets may have something.Karl asked at one point last season;

We have a bunch of very good players, why can’t that work?

The popular thought is you need a superstar to win an NBA Championship but those type of players are rare, and most of them want nothing to do with Denver or other small markets. So the Nuggets are about to try and answer Karl’s question, why can’t you win with a bunch of very good players?  Everyone else is talking about Howard and the Lakers after this trade but the Denver Nuggets got better too.
