Albert Haynesworth anyone?
[picappgallerysingle id="6998283"]Well, well. The Washington Post this afternoon is reporting the Lions might be on the front burner as a possible trade partner for DT Albert Haynesworth. Haynesworth signed the largest free agent contract last year with the Redskins, and failed to deliver on his performance. He only recorded 29 solo tackles and 4 sacks, hardly worth the guaranteed money he received.
The 6’3″ 260 pound Haynesworth can be a game changer. When his heart is in it.
Now many folks are pushing Haynesworth out of town prior to the draft, including myself. And Since Washington had to give up all that guaranteed money at the front end of the contract, and Albert making noise about not wanting to play in a 3-4 scheme now in Washington. But this is the vast opinion of the sports writers around the NFL:
The wildcard I think in this scenario is that former teammate Kyle Vanden Bosch is now on the Lions roster. Haynesworth and Vanden Bosch both played for the Tennessee Titans while Lions headcoach Jim Schwartz was the defensive coordinator for the Titans. Schwartz might be able to get the most out of Haynesworth who is only 28. A move to get Haynesworth really does allow the Lions to draft OT Russell Okung with the #2 pick overall.
Things might just be falling in place for Lions fans, but it will require what package of draft picks the Redskins would require or any compensation of that guaranteed money Haynesworth received. A reunion of Vanden Bosch and Haynesworth on the defensive line would be a major upgrade come 2010. It will come down to what Washington will want in return for a player who has basically been a bust and doesn’t want to play in a new defensive scheme.
