Lions want what’s Best
The Detroit Lions wrapped up their three day rookie camp yesterday and RB Jahvid Best knows he’s going to play a big role in the offense this coming year. The Lions traded back into the first round to acquire Best at the #30 spot and it seems they have major plans for Best on the Lions team.
While Best is a dynamic playmaker, there have been questions raised about the possibility of him being used as an every down back. In 2009, Best underwent elbow and foot surgery, and suffered two concussions while playing at the University of California. Best told reporters Sunday, “I understand there’s a lot of potential I have to play, but I just have to come in and do the best I can and help the team to win”. Meanwhile, the Lions coaching staff is throwing everything they can at Best to get him up to speed for when the Lions return to offseason workouts on May 17th. Jim Schwartz said Sunday, “We’re throwing everything we have at him. We didn’t spoon-feed it. He’s a guy that when he does come back, he has to assimilate right away into the offense. We can’t slow the offense down for where he is.”
Best will most likely split time with other Lions backs during the regular season. As the Lions start the season, the other back will most likely be Maurice Morris, but once Kevin Smith recovers from reconstructive knee surgery, he’ll be back in the lineup.
When healthy, Smith too is a dynamic playmaker, rushing for nearly 1000 yards and 8 touchdowns his rookie year while playing on a team which went 0-16. A backfield of Smith and Best will be something very exciting to watch.
