The Detroit Lions Rise from the Ashes
The Lions fired their president and CEO Matt Millen on September 24th 2008. Millen joined the organization in 2001 to bring change and make Detroit a winning football franchise. He clearly was better suited to do broadcasting then to run a football franchise considering he only produced 31 victories during his tenure with the Lions. Millen brought controversy and problems throughout his time with the Lions. His poor drafting of first round picks such as; Joey Harrington, Charles Johnson, and Mike Williams, resulted in players who did not produce on the field and caused headaches off the field.
The Detroit Lions continued making changes that would improve their team in the future when they traded their pro bowl wide receiver Roy Williams to the Dallas Cowboys on October 14th 2008. Williams would sign a new contract with them and never play up to it.
The trade led the way for Calvin Johnson to become the star he was meant to be as wide receiver for the Lions. Even though the team went winless in 2008, Johnson led the league in touchdown receptions with a revolving door of quarterbacks. The Lions made the right call in trading Williams away.
The Lions brought in the prefect coach to lead them in Jim Schwartz . His attitude towards rebuilding the team was contagious throughout the Lions organization from the top to the bottom.
Then in the 2009 and 2010 drafts the Lions would pick Matthew Stafford and Ndammukong Suh in the first round and in 2011 the Lions won 10 games. Detroit Lions fans have had to deal with a bad football franchise for a long time, then the 2011 Lions gave them something to cheer for and to be proud of by making the playoffs.
It took a big house cleaning job throughout the entire Lions organization to manufacture the winning team they are producing on the field today. The future is bright for the Detroit Lions. Their fans are hoping it means the Lombardi trophy will be hoisted in their town very soon and often in the future.
