The Lions recently success In the NFL draft help lead them back to the playoffs in 2011, their first appearance since 1999. The salaries of Matthew Stafford, Kyle Vanden Bosch, Calvin Johnson, and Ndamukong suh take up about sixty percent of the Detroit Lions payroll.

There are reports that the Lions are over the new NFL salary cap by about 11 millions dollars. To help get the Lions under the cap Ndamukong Suh, Nate Burelson, Matthew Stafford all have reportedly restructured their salaries to help give the Detroit Lions some flexibility with their team payroll. Hopefully the Detroit Lions will be able to do the same with Kyle Vanden Bosch and Calvin Johnson’s salaries.

The Detroit Lions will need this flexibility in the event they are not able to resign their own free agents such as Stephen Tullock, Eric Wright, and others. They will have to replace these players in the 2012 NFL draft, as well as able to sign quality free agents at a smaller salary. Helping the Detroit Lions to improve on what they accomplished in the 2011 season, going forward into the 2012 season with higher expectations.
