The Detroit Red Wings continued their streak of good hockey into Vancouver on Thursday night, and picked up two points in the process.  The defending Western Conference Champion Canucks came into this game with the best record in the Northwest Division, and only three points back of Detroit for the most points in the West.

Needless to say, Detroit got what they came for.  Detroit never trailed in this one, taking 1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 leads before closing it out in the shootout.  A shootout victory was misleading in terms of just how dominant Detroit was.  Canucks coach Alain Vigneault even went as far as saying his squad was “taken to school,” and that Detroit was the best team in the ice “by far.”  Despite being thoroughly outplayed, the resilient Canucks were able to tie the score each time Detroit took the lead.  Detroit needed only two shooters in the shootout, as Pavel Datsyuk and Jiri Hudler each found the back of the net to give Detroit their 9th win in the last 10 games.  The win put Detroit 4 points clear of everybody else in the West.

Dan Cleary opened the scoring for Detroit with a nifty drive through a couple Canuck defenders before beating Roberto Luongo with the backhand.  Ryan Kessler tied the game at 1 later in the first period when he put home a bouncing puck in front of Jimmy Howard.  Drew Miller played the part of hero and goat for Detroit; his bad giveaway in the defensive zone led to Vancouver’s second equalizer.  Miller then scored Detroit’s third goal; a pure effort goal in which the Wings needed a few chances before Miller was able to beat Luongo.  Jimmy Howard was his usual self in goal for Detroit.

The Wings are back at it Thursday against lowly Edmonton; a chance to put more distance between themselves and the rest of the pack.
