Getting The Monkey, Err Shark, Off Their Backs

It’s no secret that the San Jose Sharks have owned the Detroit Red Wings over the last couple of seasons.  The Sharks have eliminated the Wings in each of the last two playoffs, and had won five in a row in the regular season against Detroit.  San Jose has certainly had Detroit’s number, until Sunday.

Detroit finally got that monkey off their backs, so to speak, taking out San Jose 3-2 in a game that Detroit controlled more than the scoreline would indicate.  Detroit controlled for much of the game, and both San Jose goals were the result of some luck and good bounces.

Darren Helm was largely the best skater throughout, including a goal and a short handed breakaway that Sharks goaltender Antti Niemi put an end to.  San Jose’s abundance of size has been a problem for Detroit over the last couple of seasons; something that Detroit will need to counteract with speed if they plan on advancing past San Jose this spring.  Helm and his speedy sidekick Justin Abdelkader were able to sneak in between San Jose defenders to create multiple scoring chances.

Does this win mean that Detroit will eliminate San Jose in the spring?  No not necessarily, but it is a good start and reason for increased optimism for Wings fans going forward.  Although 23 in a row at home might create enough optimism for some.
