It appears the Detroit Red Wings have decided on their next target to strengthen their blue line.  Help could possibly come in the form of the St. Louis Blues Carlo Colaiacovo.  Sources around the internet are buzzing that the Wings have offered the 29-year old blueliner a “long-term deal.”  Unfortunately the length of term and dollar amount are pure speculation at the moment, with the Wings likely airing on the side of caution due to Colaiacovo’s oft-injured form.

A multi-year offer could be 3-4 years, as any more would likely be too high of a risk should Colaiacovo spend much of the seasons with the team physicians rather than coaches.  Making 2.5 million last year, it would seem likely that with inflation and the current drought of defensive talent on the market, he will receive a slight raise with whichever club he signs.  Seen as many NHL clubs’ plan C or even D, it shows how little talent is to be found on the free market when a player who has not played a full season in his entire career can fetch multiple offers from elite-level teams (supposedly the New York Rangers are also in play) .

The fact remains that even a small oasis of water seems like an ocean in a desert.  The situation is not much different for the Wings, who desperately want to make some change or addition to their lineup, if for no other reason to show the fans and players that they are trying to put tother a cup-contending team.
