What We Learned in Fantasy Football from Week 2

This week was your standard unpredictable week of NFL football: QBs were benched, RBs were injured and No. 2 WRs had huge games. Amongst the craziness, here is what we learned from the second week of the fantasy season:

–Aaron Rodgers seemed to get back on track after his weak season opener, scoring 3 total TDs, 2 passing and 1 rushing. However, the biggest test was to see how Green Bay RB Brandon Jackson would fare after taking over the starting spot for the injured Ryan Grant. He was shut down by the Buffalo Bills Defense, rushing for just 29 yards on 11 carries. He did, however, get the goal line carries and scored a TD. Owners should be worried about FB John Kuhn who gobbled up 9 carries for 36 yards. I still doubt Jackson’s fantasy value. Ryan Grant will be missed.

–Before I talk about Miami vs. Minnesota, can I first brag about picking Miami to upset Minnesota? I saw this one coming a mile away, and here’s why: I seriously doubt Brett Favre this year. Fantasy owners are beginning to doubt him too. Combine that with the very tough Miami Dolphins Defense that totaled 24 fantasy points in most leagues, and you have a huge upset. If Miami’s Defense is still available in your league, pick them up.

–The Kansas City Chiefs are looking hot this year, but where is the fantasy value? When you look at the game, you will notice that no one on the offense had a TD, and Jamaal Charles lost a ton of touches to Thomas Jones. My bets are still on Charles as the most fantasy worthy because of his explosive play-making ability, but don’t count Jones out either.

–Everyone reached to draft the Jets Defense this year, but you should have drafted the Pittsburgh Steelers D. They are the Steel Curtain once again, holding Chris Johnson to just 34 yards on 16 attempts. Read that last sentence again.

–Do you remember last year when Jay Cutler threw 26 interceptions? I do, and I laughed at how comically bad his passes looked. But this year could be the year of Cutler. He has 5 TDs already and this last week against the Cowboys, he went 21-of-29. His true test will come against the Packers this next week. I doubt he’ll go 21-for-29 again, but he’ll for sure sling some TD passes. Mike Martz is going to make it rain all season long.

–If you told me that a team lost their starting quarterback in Week 1, I would assume that in Week 2 they would struggle. But when your backup QB is Michael Vick, there is no need to worry. Vick proved once again that he can do it all. Last weekend, it was his rushing that was impressive, but this past week he threw 2 TDs. One was to his perfect receiver DeSean Jackson. They are perfect for each other because if Vick has to scramble and improvise, Jackson can beat the defense with his speed. Jackson did precisely this while gaining his 135 yards on just 4 receptions against the Lions. I don’t know what I don’t like about the Eagles, because I love RB LeSean McCoy too. With Leonard Weaver out, the only person McCoy has to worry about losing carries to is Vick. McCoy rushed for 120 yards on 16 carries and had 3 TDs, so fantasy owners love him, too. The Lions also had a huge game with their RB rookie Jahvid Best. Best had the best receiving numbers out of anyone in the NFL this week with 154 yards and a 75-yard TD off a screen pass. He also managed to rush for 78 yards and 2 TDs.

–If it’s any proof that the Pittsburgh Steelers Defense is the real deal, the Falcons, who had their wings clipped last week against the Steelers, lit up the board with 41 points this week against the Cardinals. RB Michael Turner was rushing very well, but backup RB Jason Snelling came in and put up 129 yards and 2 TDs. Turner should be back this next week, but keep an eye on the very capable Snelling.

–Alright, I am convinced. I will pick up Tampa Bay’s Josh Freeman as a backup QB in all my leagues. He threw 2 TDs again this week with only 178 yards, but he rushed for 43 yards. He’s a young Mike Vick. He is throwing to Mike Williams, who may just be a young Randy Moss. I know you all made trades in Madden 2003 to get Vick and Moss on the same team, so grab these guys while they are still sleepers.

–Everyone has been raving about the Ravens, but Joe Flacco, who threw 3 INTs and just 1 TD against the Bengals, proved that they still need a little work before they can live up to the hype. What is up with the AFC North? With the Bengals Defense, Ravens Defense and Steelers Defense, I predict low scoring matchups like this one all year long.

Everybody who played Demaryius Thomas last week certainly celebrated, too.

–Coming off of an ankle injury, Denver rookie WR Demaryius Thomas racked up 97 yards and a TD in their 31-14 win over the Seahawks. Kyle Orton also had a huge game with 307 yards and 2 TDs. With Eddie Royal and now Demaryius Thomas in the lineup, Orton will be continue to rack up the yards.

–Oakland’s RB Darren “Run DMC” McFadden had another monster game with 145 yards on 30 carries. Michael Bush is still out with his thumb injury, but McFadden has been proving that they don’t need him.

–Last week, the Houston Texans didn’t need to pass to WR Andre Johnson, and this week, they didn’t need to hand it off to RB Arian Foster. The very versatile Texans went to the air all game long. Schaub passed for 497 yards and 3 TDs. He also had 2 receivers over 100 yards. Andre Johnson had 158 yards and TD and Kevin Walter had 144 yards and a TD. The other side of this game saw Redskins Clinton Portis becoming fantasy relevant again. Though he had a poor outing in yards, he did have 2 TDs. Donovan McNabb also had a huge game with 426 yards and a TD.

–Maybe Tony was right with his prediction that Sanchez would get 30 TDs. Sanchez out-threw Tom Brady on Sunday. Brady had 2 TDs and 248 yards while completing 20 of his 36 attempts. Sanchez had 3 TDs and 220 yards and went 21-of-30. How does that explain how terrible the Jets offense was last week against the Ravens? It could be that the Ravens defense really is that good, but also that the Patriots defense is that bad. Remember that the Patriots defense allowed 24 points last week against the Bengals, though a lot of that was in garbage time. The Patriots offense looked great, though. Brady has loved his normal targets, Welker and Moss but has been giving a lot of touches to his fantastic TEs Aaron Hernandez and Rob Gronkowski. Hernandez came up huge this week with 101 yards. To address Revis’s infamous “slouch” comment, Randy Moss made an incredible one-handed 34-yard TD grab right in the middle of Revis Island. Revis either injured his hamstring for real or he was too embarrassed to continue playing this week. Unfortunately for the Jets, it is real and he will be on the sidelines for a while.

–The San Diego Chargers rookie RB Ryan Mathews has looked pretty good so far this season when he holds on to the ball, but there is one glaring problem: fumbling. He has 2 fumbles already, one in each game. Luckily, SD has a pretty capable FB–Mike Tolbert–who had a very good game with 82 yards and 2 TDs. The huge worry here for fantasy owners is that Mathews will lose goal line carries to Tolbert who has had no trouble punching it in. Mathews was sidelined late in the game as a precaution after a minor injury, but was rushing well with 26 yards on 5 carries. He is still a big question mark in my book as far as fantasy numbers go.

–The Manning Bowl. I’m sure you saw this game hyped up all week, but the Manning bowl is and always will be about Peyton. I feel like it’s mainly about Peyton trying hard not to embarrass his little brother, which is why we saw Joseph Addai get 20 carries and Donald Brown total 16 carries. I doubt that will happen again all year. Peyton spread the ball around to all his favorite targets, getting Wayne, Clark and Collie all TDs. Eli, on the other hand, couldn’t get much done, and he resorted to throwing long passes to try to get big plays. It worked a few times, but fantasy owners of RBs Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs were not thrilled about the play calling. I was sure to see another Arian Foster-like performance out of Bradshaw, but let me remind you that this was the Manning Bowl and you weren’t allowed to perform well unless your jersey said Manning on the back of it.

–The New Orleans and San Francisco game was one of the best of all last week. The Saints’ Drew Brees and 49ers’ Alex Smith both looked great with good fantasy days. The big story besides Reggie Bush’s injury, was Frank Gore. He was running like a man on a mission. He had 112 yards and a TD on 20 attempts not to mention his 7 receptions for 56 yards and a TD. That is a total of 168 yards and 2 TDs. He could have had another rushing TD, but he took a play off because he was getting tight, and Anthony Dixon punched it in for the score, his only carry of the day. This is the definition of a vulture TD.
